Japan prioritizes “physical AI” as central to growth strategy, ambassador says

Ambassador Yamada said Japan’s national strategy places AI and semiconductors at the top of 17 strategic sectors identified by a council set up by the prime minister. “If I were to describe Japan’s AI policy in one sentence, that would be that AI is at the center, the real center of Japan’s growth strategy,” he said.
Yamada elaborated that Japan is focusing on 'physical AI'—AI applied to robotics and autonomous systems—and that Japan’s strengths in precision manufacturing, health care and logistics provide the operational data needed to train such systems. He also said Japan launched an "AI for science" initiative to drive discovery, which aligns with the goals of the Genesis mission.
