Council hears plan for East 29th Street shared-use path and $1.5M federal allocation

Staff said the MPO recently banked Category 9 funds after the region exceeded 200,000 population and that Bryan’s allocation of that federal funding is $1,500,000; the city’s required cost share was described as roughly 20% (~$380,000). The presenter said construction must begin by the first quarter of 2027 and that the local TxDOT office will advertise the contract and manage construction.
Councilmembers praised the safety benefits for cyclists and pedestrians along a corridor where people currently walk in the roadway. A councilmember asked for assurances about cost overruns; staff responded that the city budgeted $400,000 in the CIP to cover the 20% cost share and that the city would be responsible for any overruns beyond the bid. "The shared use path will help alleviate" worn informal walking paths and improve ADA access, the presenter said. Council indicated broad support and no formal opposition was recorded.
