Brownsburg police describe multi-jurisdiction narcotics takedown that seized thousands of pounds
Summary
The Brownsburg Narcotics Unit, working with state and federal partners, described a cross-country investigation that led to seizures including 7,000 pounds stopped on I-70 and a Los Angeles takedown that recovered 10,660 pounds of marijuana, 539 pounds of marijuana oil and $57,000. Officials flagged an inconsistency in a summarized total for the record.

The Brownsburg Police chief outlined a multi-jurisdiction investigation that began in 2020 and escalated this year, saying a vehicle stopped Feb. 2 on I-70 yielded 7,000 pounds of marijuana and that a Feb. 11 takedown in Los Angeles recovered an additional 10,660 pounds of marijuana, 539 pounds of marijuana oil and $57,000 in U.S. currency.
"They were able to seize 7,000 pounds of marijuana and marijuana product that was inside that vehicle and heading for Indiana," Chief Joseph Grimes said when describing the I-70 stop. He credited cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department, FBI, Illinois State Police and other partners for the coordinated operation.
The chief praised the Brownsburg Narcotics Unit for investigative work stretching across jurisdictions and described arrests and multiple warehouse searches in East Los Angeles. He said those operations and earlier seizures are part of a broader effort to disrupt distribution networks that supply the region.
The record also shows an inconsistency in a later summary of total seizures. Chief Grimes said, "In all, based upon this investigation that stemmed out of Brownsburg, Indiana since 2020, the Browns BNU unit has been responsible for approximately 43 pounds of marijuana and marijuana product that has been seized." Later in the meeting he asked whether he had said "43 pounds" or "43,000," and staff noted the prior statements required a correction for the minutes. The meeting transcript therefore records the detailed seizure figures above and records the chief's request to confirm the correct cumulative figure for the record.
No formal action was taken during the meeting regarding the investigation; the chief's comments were an informational briefing to the commission. The chief repeatedly thanked partner agencies and said the narcotics unit will continue cross-jurisdiction coordination on investigations.
