On May 26 the Commissioners Court approved a motion to appoint Alicia Perez to serve as judge of County Court at Law No.13 until the next general election. Commissioner Clay Flores moved approval and Commissioner Rodriguez seconded; commissioners offered congratulations and urged Judge‑elect Perez to assist in efforts to address family‑violence case backlog once sworn in.
Perez, speaking after the vote, told the court she will coordinate with the District Attorney’s Office to better understand backlog drivers and to bring information back to the bench. She noted the office currently has “about 520 both filed and then 520 some unfiled” family‑violence related matters that she and the court will monitor as part of transition work.
The motion passed with one recorded abstention; the court applauded and asked staff to schedule any necessary swearing‑in and follow‑up briefings.
