Panel frames federation as 'social experiment'; single sign-on and reciprocity are early priorities

Panelist Gina Taurasi described federation as the Genesys mission's "biggest social experiment," emphasizing that federation means community-agreed standards, unified interfaces and a governance framework — not centralization under a single owner. "We want the community to agree on shared standards, unified interfaces and a common governance framework," Taurasi said, stressing accessibility, composability and trustworthiness as core federation attributes.
Speakers said federation raises both technical and policy challenges. Panelists pointed to single sign-on and reciprocity agreements as examples they have already worked through; Hal Finkel said implementing single sign-on required reciprocity conversations across facilities. The DOE team also emphasized that access models should not be locked to institutions: Andy Schwartz likened the platform to other DOE user facilities where access follows proposals and identities rather than employer affiliation. "If you move institutions, in theory that institution will achieve reciprocity with the platform and you will be recognized as that identity," Gina said.
Next steps: Hal and other DOE staff will stand up working groups in the Genesys Mission Consortium to capture requirements on data use agreements, interfaces and policy constraints. Hal directed attendees to genesismissionconsortium.org for an FAQ and a membership form to express interest in joining the consortium and its working groups.
