Teacher describes large bison skeleton finds, committee to reflect discovery in new sculpture

A teacher who described leading community archaeological digs said excavations near Woodburn High School recovered large bison bones in 2008 and additional bones in 2023. The teacher said an outside expert suggested the find may represent one of the largest bison skeletons identified in the region, and the committee plans a sculpture to reflect the discovery and educate residents.
"We found this bone in 2008. This bone was found in 2023... They fit perfectly," the teacher said, recounting bringing bones to a specialist and noting how the finds connected to local Ice Age geology. Committee members said the planned iron cutout sculpture will depict three bison and that the committee now opens some digs to community participation so residents can see and help find fossils.
