Woodburn held a ceremonial groundbreaking for the Mill Creek Community Center and adjacent Sedlemyer Park improvements, with Mayor Frank Monterrey calling the day "a long awaited and truly historic moment for the city of Woodburn." Officials said the work will expand the existing aquatic facility and upgrade park amenities that serve families and community events.
Monterrey said the project represents roughly $22,000,000 in investment and includes a 17,000-square-foot expansion to the aquatic facility, a 3,000-square-foot dividable event space with capacity for more than 175 people, a commercial kitchen and upgraded fitness and multipurpose spaces. He described demolition beginning the week after the ceremony and said the pool structure itself will remain while surrounding areas are rebuilt. "This project right now represents a $22,000,000 investment in our community," Monterrey said.
The ceremony included thanks to long-serving volunteers, city staff and elected officials and an invitation for council members to pick up ceremonial shovels to mark the start of construction. Officials gave an optimistic target of opening "sometime next summer," while noting immediate work will include demolition and a construction meeting later the same day.
