Sheriff's representative reports quiet months, DUI missions and arrests; resident raises neighborhood drug concerns

The council received the public-safety report for February and March from a sheriff's office representative. February included 12 minor traffic accidents, about 109 calls for service and 161 self-initiated contacts; deputies conducted an enhanced patrol detail that produced 13 traffic stops, 5 community contacts and one arrest. A coordinated DUI enforcement mission with state police and Gresham police resulted in roughly 166 traffic stops, 94 citations and 26 arrests (11 for DUI) and recovered two firearms.
In March, deputies handled about 127 calls for service with 205 self-initiated contacts and roughly 111 traffic stops; the city recorded 16 traffic accidents (one with a minor injury) and a number of hit-and-runs. The sheriff's office representative described the overall months as "pretty good overall" and said the enforcement missions help curb dangerous driving.
During public comment, a resident told the council a neighboring household appeared to harbor a person with outstanding warrants and alleged ongoing daytime and nighttime activity that worried nearby neighbors, asking whether a search warrant could be obtained. The sheriff's office representative responded: "Typically not in Oregon. It's not like an active crime... we're typically not gonna get a lot of resources for something like that" and advised residents to call 911 if an incident is in progress and the department will follow up where appropriate.
Staff also relayed that the city is discussing the county budget and potential longer-term contracting with the sheriff's office, targeting a contract effective 07/01/2027 to provide budget stability for policing services. The council welcomed the report and thanked deputies for their efforts.
