Board approves three administrative hires for Calvert County Public Schools

The Calvert County Board of Education voted to appoint Dr. Michelle Smith as executive director for elementary schools, Cecilia Lewis as executive director for secondary schools and Deborah Baker as assistant principal at St. Leonard Elementary.

Dr. Newsome introduced the candidates and outlined their experience. For Smith, Newsome listed roles including principal at Windy Hill Elementary and teaching and leadership positions at Honeytown High School and Plum Point Middle School; the board moved and approved the appointment. After the vote Smith said, "I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve Calvert County public schools in this role," and described her 29 years in education and commitment to strengthening teaching and learning.

Newsome recommended Cecilia Lewis for the secondary-schools post, citing prior roles in student services, supervision and school administration; the board approved the appointment by voice vote recorded as carrying 5–0. Lewis thanked the board and described a ‘‘high standards, high support’’ approach and plans to partner with principals and central office staff.

Newsome recommended Deborah Baker for the assistant principal position at St. Leonard Elementary, summarizing her work as acting assistant principal, dean and special‑education teacher; the board approved the appointment. Baker told the board she is "honored to be entrusted with this leadership opportunity" and looks forward to working with students, parents and staff.

The votes were recorded during the meeting as motions and voice approvals; the meeting record shows the appointments carried as moved and seconded and recognized by the presiding officer.
