Butler County approves $332,556 rescue squad purchase, vehicle delivery estimated at 14 months

The Butler County Board of Commissioners on March 31 approved the purchase of a replacement rescue vehicle and new extrication tools for the county’s all-volunteer Rescue Squad. Frank Williams, the county EMS director, recommended awarding the vehicle bid to FELD Fire for $307,156 and equipment to Rescue Specialist LLC for $25,400 after staff solicited bids through DemandStar.
Volunteer Captains Brice Denton and Steve Ash told the Board why staff favored the FELD Fire vehicle despite a lower vehicle bid from FOUTS Fire. Commissioner Kelly Herzet moved to approve the purchases, Commissioner Darren Jackson seconded, and the motion carried 5-0. Williams told the Board the expected delivery timeline for the new vehicle is "approximately 14 months."
The purchases will replace a 2004 Ford F-550 light duty/water rescue vehicle and aging extrication equipment; the Rescue Squad currently maintains two response vehicles and two sets of extrication tools, including a 35-year-old gas-powered hydraulic set. The Board record shows the FELD Fire vehicle bid excluding optional items at $307,156 and the Rescue Specialist LLC tool bid at $25,400.
The election to proceed was recorded as a formal procurement action; the Board did not identify specific funding sources in the discussion. The County will complete required contract documents and allowed the EMS director to sign them, per the motion approved by the Board.
