Public works says Wekiva Trail Segment 2 awaits property agreement, DOT sign‑off; construction hoped for 2027

Seth Lynch of Lake County Public Works told the Mount Plymouth–Sorrento CRA advisory committee that work on Wekiva Trail Segment 2 is divided into two sub‑phases and remains in the preconstruction stage.

"The we've it's been sub phased to a and b being the 1st part," Lynch said, describing segment 2a as running from the trailhead at 46A and Sorrento Avenue toward the school. He said right‑of‑way work is nearly complete and staff is working to finalize an agreement with a property owner before seeking Department of Transportation concurrence and federal grant authorizations needed to use federal construction funds.

Lynch said that, because of pending agreements and required approvals, construction is not expected to begin this year. "It's gonna construction next year, hopefully," he said, adding the project still faces several steps including board approvals and grant processes. Committee members asked for clearer timelines; staff said design updates and final bid documents will determine exact scheduling.

The committee did not take formal action on the trail at the meeting; the update was presented as part of staff reports. The advisory committee and staff indicated they will continue to monitor right‑of‑way progress and grant opportunities and will report back when DOT concurrence and board approvals are secured.
