Homeowner and applicant Dale Sidwell told the Board of Adjustments the front-yard tree at 122 West Bernard drops pods or sap that he said is damaging vehicle paint, and he asked for a modest carport to prevent further damage.
"I didn't know it at 1st when I moved in, but there's a large tree in the front yard... When it gets on to your car, it just goes right into the paint, and it's causing a lot of damage," Sidwell said. He described a detached, metal carport roughly 12 by 20 feet, open on the sides and anchored to the concrete.
Council and staff clarified technical details: the town's standard setback is 25 feet from the street and the proposed carport would fall about 8–9 feet inside that line, which is the reason the applicant sought a variance. A council member noted similar carports exist in town and said staff, as part of the comprehensive plan work, is exploring a zoning overlay for portions of the town that could reduce setback requirements for small lots.
The board closed public comment, voted to approve the variance, and adjourned the hearing.
