Yachats council adopts proclamation opposing proposed ICE detention site on Oregon coast

The Yachats City Council on Dec. 17 adopted a proclamation formally opposing the siting of any Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention or processing facility within Newport, Yachats, or anywhere on the Oregon Coast.
Mayor Greg Berdy read the proclamation and moved its adoption. The council voted by voice vote, with members responding "aye," and the mayor said the proclamation will be entered into the city's public record. "Now, therefore, be it resolved that I, Greg Berdy, mayor of the City Of Yahtz, on behalf of the city council and residents, do hereby formally declare the the City Of Yahad's unwavering support for the city of Newport's official stance in opposition to the siting of any ICE detention or processing facilities within the city limits at Newport or anywhere on the Oregon Coast," the mayor read as part of the text presented to council.
The proclamation argues a facility could harm the region's reputation as a welcoming tourism destination, raise public-safety and community-wellbeing concerns, and conflict with Oregon's long-standing sanctuary policies. Council members did not offer amendments and moved the proclamation to the record; Mayor Berdy closed the item after the vote.
The council did not authorize any specific expenditures tied to the proclamation at the meeting.
