Library manager reports growth in users, programs and grants; bookmobile funded with ARPA dollars

Mike Janssen, Woodburn's library manager, briefed council on the library's operations and usage in the past year and listed staffing, budgets and grants. He said the library's general operating fund is about $1,200,000 with approximately $1,100,000 appropriated by the city and about $100,000 from CCRLS.
Janssen outlined the library's expenditures: salaries and benefits roughly $762,000, a collection budget near $40,000, and programming funds around $18,000. He described recent successful grant awards: an ALA capacity grant used for citizenship and ESL programming, a $10,000 Carnegie libraries grant, an early-learning Marion County grant, and a State Ready to Read grant that funds summer reading efforts. He also said the library received about $100,000 in ARPA funding to buy and outfit a bookmobile used for outreach across the city and neighboring areas.
On usage metrics, Janssen said the library has about 8,600 registered users (adding roughly 1,300 last year), checked out about 49,180 print items, circulated tens of thousands of other media and ran about 253 programs with about 2,300 attendees. He noted ongoing bilingual offerings, weekly story times in English and Spanish, citizenship classes, ESL and digital resources such as Mango Languages, Kanopy and Comics Plus provided by the regional cooperative.
Councilors praised staff and volunteers; Jesse Coleman, Community Services Director, introduced the manager and highlighted staff contributions. Janssen said the library will continue to reallocate budget lines to support popular adult art programs and outreach work.
