City staff noted the firm has a substantial public-sector practice and can provide a range of legal services, from employment and contract law to public meetings and records issues. "Jeff Condit is retiring at the end of the month," staff said when introducing the item.
Councilors discussed how frequently the new attorney should attend meetings. Some members said having the attorney present regularly helps the attorney stay current on city business; others suggested an initial period of more frequent attendance, then moving to as-needed participation to control costs. One councilor moved the resolution and it passed by voice vote.
In closing remarks honoring the outgoing attorney, staff said the city would offer a consumable gift per his preference. "Jeff has served as your city attorney for 26 years," staff said, and Jeff offered brief farewell remarks to the council.
