CSAC presents survey and options on deer management; council to take topic to work session

CSAC Chair Vicki Ginther and staff member Emily Gulliver presented a multi‑year review of deer‑management options, regional benchmarking and results from a January 2026 resident survey that drew 3,656 responses (nearly 95% from Dublin residents). The survey showed 59% of respondents believe the population is increasing and should be managed; 49% supported lethal methods and 33% opposed.
CSAC outlined pros and cons of options: targeted removal (professional sharpshooters) can quickly reduce populations and may provide venison to food pantries but carries costs and potential public opposition; archery requires more staff oversight and delivers slower reductions; fertility control and relocation are constrained by law or practicality. Several council members emphasized public perception of safety and asked CSAC to develop monitoring metrics. Council voted unanimously to move the topic to a work session to hear outside experts and refine metrics.
