DeSoto council backs staff move to apply for Texas cultural-district designation

Mayor Rachel L. Proctor summarized the consensus: “We are okay with you pursuing free money,” and the council asked staff to return with a final presentation in May and a resolution by June 2 if they choose to proceed.
Why it matters: the Cultural District designation is a discretionary, state-recognized label that can improve grant competitiveness, attract events and tourism, and support corridor-activation work tied to the city’s Hampton Road strategy. What’s next: staff will continue community engagement, provide requested timeline clarifications, and return in May with additional materials. If the council approves a resolution by June 2, staff plans to submit the TCA application by the June 15 deadline.
