Council approves grant application for first-responder resiliency and counseling

The DeSoto City Council unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the DeSoto Police Department to submit an application to the Office of the Governor for a criminal-justice program grant to fund resiliency and mental-health training for first responders.
Chief Jesenek summarized the request, saying the program combines training (peer support, suicide awareness, critical-incident stress management) with counseling services tailored to first responders and that the city requested $37,700 per year depending on award length. "This is the same grant program, the state of Texas criminal justice program grant," the chief said, noting staff filed a draft resolution with the state and sought council approval to finalize the submission.
Council members approved the resolution without recorded opposition. The grant, if awarded, would fund training and counseling intended to support first-responder wellness; the council did not vote on program vendor selection at the meeting.
