SHAC recommends 'Always Changing' for 4th grade and AISD Human Sexuality video for 5th grade

Kathy Martinez, the district’s director of health services, presented the School Health Advisory Council’s review of elementary puberty and maturation curricula after a series of open meetings and evaluations.
“We're here to discuss the puberty maturation curriculum that was voted on by SHAC recently,” Martinez said, describing a process of open meetings across the district where attendees reviewed materials and completed evaluations.
Veronica Cuellar summarized SHAC’s recommendations: for fourth grade the committee recommended the Always Changing video, and for fifth grade the AISD Human Sexuality and Responsibility video. Cuellar noted practical concerns such as vendor packages that include full health curricula or physical take-home materials the district would not use, and recommended revisiting curriculum licensing when Quaver Health’s license expires.
The board asked clarifying questions about grade-by-grade delivery and whether materials would be presented in single-sex settings; staff said the recommended materials are designed for small-group or classroom delivery and that scheduling will be confirmed before rollout.
Next steps: the recommendation will be considered by the board at a future meeting for adoption; staff will return with implementation details for parent communications and scheduling.
