Summer events drew tens of thousands to Downtown Garland, staff say

Staff reported successful summer programming, including the July 3 Red/White/You event with an estimated 20,000 visitors and a 32-minute fireworks show; staff plan repeat programming in fall and winter holiday attractions including a skating rink.
Nancy Tennell described a busy season for downtown events and programming, crediting partnerships and strategic placement of performers and activities. "We had 20,000 visitors come to the downtown district over the day," she said of the Red/White/You event on July 3; she also noted a 32-minute fireworks display and projection lighting on City Hall.
Staff recapped other successes—the spring music series, an Asian American Heritage Festival, Juneteenth celebrations and Willie Nelson-related centennial events—and said many performances and screenings were sold out. Nancy said staff plan to reinstate the fall music series and are programming a Selena tribute performance on Aug. 1; they expect the skating rink (planned for mid-November through January) to draw additional visitors.
