Board hears contract report; Regional Day School for the Deaf contract nearly doubled, staff say

Business services staff presented recurring contracts that may exceed $50,000 annually and identified the largest line items: property casualty insurance, copier/printer services and a regional day school partnership for deaf services. The slide deck showed that the property casualty expense remained near prior levels while the Regional Day School for the Deaf contract had risen sharply.
"This contract is nearly doubled. We were really surprised. We were given no warning of this and we actually felt the impact of it during the 2025-2026 fiscal year," the presenter, Dana, told trustees and said the increase will largely be offset by high-cost funds reimbursing districts for serving high-needs students. The presentation also noted a budget increase for special education contracted personnel to maintain compliance when vacancies occur and identified roughly $400,000 in reduced spending across credit recovery software, HVAC maintenance and plumbing services.
Trustees asked about contract terms and curriculum vendors; a trustee raised concerns about the Bluebonnet Learning program and staff clarified the district has not adopted Bluebonnet's reading curriculum and currently uses Bluebonnet materials for math only. The board moved to approve the contracts and the motion passed unanimously.
