District outlines plan to bring child nutrition in‑house, promises cost analysis

District staff presented a plan to transition child nutrition services from a contracted operator (Sodexo) to an in‑house model, a move the administration called “reclaiming the plate.” Ms. Edgar said the district already owns much of the equipment and procurement systems and that bringing operations in house would allow direct contracting with distributors, potentially better pricing, and more direct control over sourcing and menu decisions. She said the model would allow the district to prioritize organic or local products while retaining more of the program’s revenue within the district.

Ms. Edgar described staffing needs if the district proceeds: direct hires for 4–5 positions including a food service director, a chef/dietitian, one to two area managers and an assistant (roles currently employed under the Sodexo contract). She said director‑level hires would require board action. Trustees asked for a cost comparison to quantify current contracted costs versus projected in‑house expenditures; one trustee requested, “Can we possibly get a cost analysis of what it costs now versus what it will cost with this?” Staff said they are coordinating with the regional service center and the Texas Department of Agriculture and will return with a cost analysis and implementation timeline.
