Board discusses public-records fees as policy review continues

During first readings of administrative policies, S1 flagged the district's public-records policy and the current charge of 25¢ per page for copies. S4 and other board members described experiences with commercial requests for bulk records and noted that the law allows the district to recoup costs. Options discussed included raising per-page charges to $0.50–$1.00, adding a flat fee for large requests (suggested amounts ranged up to $500 in one example), or establishing a $100 flat fee plus per-page charges for extensive requests to deter nuisance requests while preserving access for parents seeking records about their children.

S1 emphasized the board’s willingness to waive fees for routine parental requests: "If a parent came in and wants their own information about their child, no [fee]," S1 said. Board members agreed to bring proposed language back through the policy committee for redrafting and to ensure legitimate public-records access is preserved while preventing disproportionate administrative burden from large commercial requests.
