Residents press council to recheck signal timing after recent fatal crashes

Multiple speakers during public comment urged the council to investigate traffic-signal timing and other road safety measures after recent fatalities. Mike Fisher (speaker 18) recounted two recent fatal crashes and asked the city to examine timing at a specific intersection, arguing that adding an extra 0.3 seconds to the all-red delay could have prevented one crash he described. "When you do that, it's 2.3 seconds. So if you added 0.3 seconds to that, that accident would not have happened," Fisher said.
Council and staff agreed to integrate Fisher's request into the department's existing intersection study process. Donnie (speaker 9) said the city performs MUTCD-based analyses and will include Fisher's intersection in a broader timing review and can bring results back to council. The mayor asked staff to pull six to twelve months of crash data, prioritize fatalities, and check for contributing factors such as speed and alcohol with APD. Council directed staff to present findings at a future meeting and to consider whether targeted timing adjustments or a more systemic study is warranted.
