Neighbors tell ADEM landfill expansion would worsen daily nuisance, allege past noncompliance
Summary
Adjacent property owners said at an ADEM hearing that daily operations at the Dothan Sanitary Landfill cause loud activity, litter, and large numbers of buzzards and coyotes; speakers alleged the city previously failed to cover the landfill at night as required and cited past litigation.

Several nearby property owners told the hearing they already experience daily nuisance from the landfill and oppose expansion. David Del Vecchio said he owns property that "butts up to the dump" and described repeated morning noise when trucks arrive, ongoing litter, and numerous buzzards flying over homes. He said the city had previously lost court challenges brought by residents.
Another neighbor, Michael Delvecchio, told ADEM that a nearby resident reported a waterway behind her house that smelled of chemicals and that ADEM had not contacted her within a month of the prior hearing. "So why would we want to expand something to make it worse when we know that no one hears our complaints right now?" he asked. The transcript contains no response from ADEM staff or the landfill operator to these specific local complaints during the hearing.
