Library staff reported the West Garland Library project is in its final construction phase and that the team is working toward a certificate of occupancy that will allow staff to move in, set up collections and equipment and prepare for a public opening.
"We're working towards our certificate of occupancy," the director said, adding that the project is in "the last 2 minutes of a basketball game" with many small items left on the punch list. Staff reported an opening-date collection of materials was delivered (about 11 pallets), IT and makerspace equipment will be installed before the public opening, and Walnut Creek Branch will close roughly two weeks before opening to facilitate the move. The board was told a tentative grand-opening date of Friday, Sept. 26, with a backup date of Saturday, Oct. 25, and that staff would confirm timing by the end of the month.
Board members asked about contingency scheduling and vendor flexibility; staff said closures and schedules will shift if the certificate of occupancy date changes, and that some heavy work (HVAC replacement at other branches) may be scheduled outside public hours to minimize disruption.
