Council backs phase 2 of Dublin Community Recreation Center refresh, seeks more capacity data

Matt Ehrman (city staff) and Keith Hall (MSA) outlined completed phase 1 work and proposed phase 2 improvements focused on the Talus event space (lighting, acoustics, finishes), renovation of a long‑overdue restroom to meet ADA standards, and study of the Abbey Theater entrance and lobby.
Design partner Maria Carpenter described materials and finishes proposed for the Talus: higher‑NRC ceiling tiles to absorb sound, updated lighting with cove options, a walnut‑toned wood palette, durable wall coverings and carpet tile for maintenance, and replacement doors and refined finishes in circulation areas. Staff said schematic drawings are targeted for completion in June with bidding and award by the end of summer and construction through fall into spring of next year.
Council members supported the goal but asked for additional usage and occupancy data to guide prioritization. One councilor referenced a $1.8 million figure for phase 2 and said they would like booking and utilization metrics for the Talus and more clarity on whether locker rooms and aquatics should be advanced earlier. Keith Hall noted that phasing tied to available capital and potential partnerships (including SportsOhio) will shape later phases; staff said they will return with a full schematic package and cost priorities in June 2026.
