Whitney Boylston, director of Lake County Animal Services, told commissioners shelter admissions are increasing and the department is expanding community‑based programs such as Operation Community Caturday and a "wait till 8" foster program for very young kittens. “So far, I think we have seen about 150 cats and kittens coming in from Tavares,” Boylston said while describing targeted trapping and special spay days.
Boylston said the county is managing a rabies alert in Tavares after a single positive test. “We have the 1 single positive which triggers an alert from the Department of Health for 60 days,” she said, and described a four‑month quarantine protocol for kittens originating from the alert area prior to placement. The department plans a public discussion on June 12 with a Department of Health representative to explain care and placement criteria.
