Building Services cites faster plan review, 17,000 permits issued amid staffing changes

Bill Ondelich, director of the county's Office of Building Services, told the board the department has reduced its average plan review time to about two days and has implemented staffing changes to improve customer service. “Weve issued 17,000 permits and assisted 8,200 walk‑in customers,” Ondelich said, citing the offices recent throughput.
The department has combined permit technician and associate planner roles into a new development review technician classification and completed cross‑training; Ondelich said the changes helped avoid moving staff between windows and improved response times. He also described a cautious rollout of virtual inspections for basic items such as water‑heater and AC replacements and window and door swaps, with an instruction list and eligibility posted online. Commissioners pressed about limits on virtual inspections and Ondelich said the program has been live a little over eight weeks and is intended for simple, visual checks rather than complex framing or foundation inspections.
