Hidalgo County’s Commissioner's Court adopted proclamations recognizing domestic workers and raising awareness about elder abuse during Tuesday’s session. The court formally declared June 16, 2026 as International Domestic Workers Day and proclaimed June 2026 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month for the county.
Lupita Sanchez, representing Border Workers United, thanked the court for the domestic workers proclamation and urged broader local protections. Sanchez cited regional concerns and noted that the Texas Workforce Commission had ordered roughly $49,000,000 in back pay over the last five years, urging the county to consider local measures that could deny municipal contracts or permits to employers found to commit wage theft. “This crisis disproportionately affects domestic workers and care providers,” Sanchez said during remarks supporting the proclamation.
For elder-abuse awareness, Maribel Gonzales of Adult Protective Services emphasized the scale of the problem and the need for education and reporting. The proclamation cited reported cases in Texas (125,382 in 2025) and asked Hidalgo County residents to unite in safeguarding older adults. Gonzales told the court the recognition reinforces outreach and prevention efforts and thanked county leadership for the proclamation.
Both proclamations were adopted by voice vote; the court recorded no opposing votes and moved to other agenda items.
