Residents press court on taxes, ballot-board pay and juvenile boot camp concerns during open forum

Several members of the public used the open-forum period to raise distinct concerns for the county commissioner's consideration.

Fern McClarty urged the court to consider the financial strain on families amid rising local budgets and an upcoming $50 million bond issuance, asking how the county assesses how much tax burden is "too much." Laurel McLeish, who said she served as a presiding judge during a hand recount, warned of staffing challenges under new state recount rules and asked the court to consider higher pay for ballot-board workers; she said a November recount could require 20–25 people and low pay discourages participation. "What I'm asking you all is please look and see if whether you can increase the pay for those that are working the ballot board," she said.

Francisco Guerra described a personal family case involving his son at a county boot camp, alleging possible mistreatment and asking the court to investigate the incident and clarify reporting channels; he said litigation is underway and asked for county-level follow-up. Commissioners acknowledged the public comments and asked departmental staff to return with information where appropriate (for example, the elections office agreed to report back on ballot-board pay recommendations).
