Land committee recommends appraisals for three high-priority Lake County parcels

The Lake County Land Acquisition Advisory Committee voted to recommend that the Board of County Commissioners authorize appraisals for three parcels: Sunderman, Shelley Chastain and Holloway. The committee approved the recommendation by majority voice after staff presentations and public comment.

Wendy Pogue, Lake County public land manager, briefed the committee on the staff evaluations that prompted the recommendation. She said the Sunderman property scored 38 of 48 on the county’s scorecard and described it as “adjacent to the pasture reserve” with intact longleaf-scrub habitats. Committee members cited urgency from nearby development pressure and the prospect of grant matches as reasons to move appraisal work forward now rather than later.

During discussion, members emphasized that appraisals and more detailed due diligence would proceed only with Board of County Commissioners (BCC) approval. Angela (county staff) confirmed that, if the BCC authorizes appraisals, staff will commission title work, surveys and environmental reviews as appropriate. By consensus the committee also requested staff prepare property cards and entitlement/asking-price information for additional candidates including the National Developers parcel, Kinggrove, and Wilson Island ahead of the next meeting.

The committee’s motion was made by a committee member who requested the appraisal process begin for the three named parcels and seconded by another member; Chair Tim Salin called the voice vote and declared the motion passed. Next procedural steps include the July 30 committee meeting and a BCC agenda item to authorize appraisals and to begin bond/financing discussions if the commission chooses.
