Community Services Commission forwards CDBG funding recommendations to City Council

The La Habra Community Services Commission voted Feb. 11 to accept a subcommittee’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding recommendations and forward them to City Council for approval.
During the discussion staff presented the subcommittee’s allocations: the La Habra Veterans Drop-In Resource Center requested $10,000 (subcommittee recommended $3,000); the Fair Housing Foundation requested $10,000 (recommended $9,000); and Mercy House requested $9,300 (recommendation discussed). A staff presenter said commissioners Carrie and Richard served on the subcommittee and described how limited funds required shifting modest amounts between requests. One commissioner said, "I wish we had more money," noting demand exceeds available CDBG dollars.
A commissioner moved to accept the recommendations and forward them to City Council; another seconded and the motion passed by voice vote. Staff stated that Susan Louie and her team plan to present the recommendations to the City Council in April.
The staff presentation said much of the funding for capital projects in recent years has come from reallocated CDBG capital funds; staff emphasized these are grant funds and that the city’s general fund was not being used for the lighting project discussed later in the meeting. The commission did not take final appropriations action; the City Council will make the final funding decisions.
