Johnson County posts resolution on data centers and urges residents to pressure state lawmakers

At the June 8 session the County Judge said the court has posted its resolution calling for enhanced regulation of data centers on the Johnson County website and asked citizens to use that resolution language when contacting state officials.
"It is on our website under our... orders and resolutions," the Judge said, adding that staff would work with IT to place the resolution on the front page to make it easier for citizens to copy language and send it to state representatives. Commissioner Bailey reminded the audience the court has taken a stand not to support tax abatements for data centers and urged organized outreach to the governor and legislators.
County leaders and a Tax Association of Counties (TAC) representative said many counties across Texas are dealing with similar data‑center inquiries and plan a consolidated statewide resolution. The court encouraged residents to coordinate letters and suggested using a stock letter format to amplify messages to the governor, state senator and state representative.
Why it matters: county officials signaled they lack full local permitting authority for some large projects and view state‑level changes as necessary. The court wants residents to help by contacting Austin, while staff will continue intergovernmental coordination and legislative advocacy.
