Summary

The Johnson County Commissioners Court held a public hearing March 9 on a junkyard license application for Scrap Daddy's Metal Recycling LLC to operate at 980 North State Highway 174 in Rio Vista on property owned by DeRoaches Construction LLC. Miss Vanderlyn told the court the site previously operated in a similar capacity, that required fencing and controls remain in place, and that county inspectors had verified compliance.
A nearby resident who approached the podium identified himself as Sanjay Sar and asked, "My name is Sanjay Sar. And I wanna know this get contaminated or any kind of chemicals that leach out into the neighbors." County staff and commissioners noted that TCEQ sets storage and processing requirements outside the county's scope but that the county includes drainage and flood review in licensing; one commissioner and staff said the site had no recent complaints recorded. The court approved the license with a unanimous voice vote after staff confirmed the application met local licensing requirements.
The court directed staff to continue using TCEQ requirements and county inspections as part of the licensing process. Neighbors were urged to attend TCEQ or county meetings if they want additional oversight.
