Lake Jackson council votes to stop Comcast PEG fee collection

The Lake Jackson City Council voted to adopt Resolution No. 1009 at its April 6 meeting, asking Comcast to stop collecting public, educational and governmental (PEG) access fees on the city's behalf.
City staff explained the city receives about $65,000 annually in PEG fees but has struggled to spend the funds because of restrictive allowable uses. "If we keep collecting it, we'll never spend this money," a staff member said, and noted the remaining balance could fund operations for many years. Councilman Casperman Sinhonya moved approval; Councilman Schooler seconded the motion. The mayor called for the vote and the motion carried without recorded opposition.
Staff said the city will notify Comcast to stop collection and will revisit the decision if future councils or law changes allow broader use of the funds.
