James Island council approves SafeBuilt contract to run town building services

The Town of James Island voted unanimously to approve a professional services agreement with SafeBuilt Carolinas LLC to deliver local building-permit processing, inspections and planning-and-zoning support for the town.
Mayor Brooke Lyon, announcing the agreement, said the change will let the town operate its own building program and that sample permit comparisons show modest cost savings for residents. SafeBuilt’s South Carolina operations manager Scott McDaniel told council the firm “wants to pride ourselves as being an extra set of eyes to your eyes,” stressing the company’s role in helping local officials manage inspections and speed project turnaround.
Councilmembers discussed contract terms and the town’s plan to adopt related ordinance language to replace references to Charleston County. Council approved three ordinances on first reading to authorize the program and schedule the required public hearing and second readings two weeks later; officials said the town is aiming to implement the program on or about May 1, subject to final adoption. The council noted the contract can be terminated with 90 days’ notice.
The contract vote was taken by roll call and passed unanimously. The council also directed staff to finalize ordinance language for the April 30 special meeting so that the town can move forward with SafeBuilt implementation.
