Scott Christen, the city’s Director of Public Works, presented a multi-phase plan to reconstruct Highland Shores Boulevard, a project he said is just under a mile and split into three phases (an asphalt phase and two concrete phases). He told attendees the city estimates the full project at $10,200,000 and said Denton County approved adding the section into a bond package that voters later approved to fund half the cost.
“The bonds did get voter approved … they’re gonna fund 50% of our $10,200,000 proposed project,” Christen said, adding that the corridor is nearing design completion. Christen told the audience the city removed proposed roundabouts after community opposition and anticipates construction beginning in late 2026 with much of the work continuing through 2028, describing “around a 2 year time frame for construction.” The design includes added sidewalks on the lakeside, widened bike lanes and a new dedicated turn lane to improve safety and reduce mid-block U-turns.
Christen emphasized that some existing trees will be removed for sight-line and safety reasons but that the city plans replacement plantings in selected locations. He also said the Highland Shores HOA has been briefed and that planned drainage work and sanitary sewer projects in the area must be completed or coordinated before major paving begins.
