Commissioners launch local coalition and pilot actions to expand childcare supply and provider capacity

Commissioner Briones and a cross‑sector coalition briefed the court about local steps intended to expand childcare supply, reduce barriers for new providers and prepare to advocate for state policy changes ahead of the next legislative session. The court heard that roughly 18,000 children in the region remain on childcare waiting lists and that roughly 45% of local providers lack Texas Rising Star certification needed to draw certain subsidy dollars.

To address local obstacles, commissioners directed the Office of Economic Equity and Opportunity to design a childcare business accelerator to help local providers with licensing, business planning and access to capital, and directed the Office of County Administration to review all county inspection, permitting and fee processes that affect childcare providers. The motions also asked county offices to build a plan for outreach to families (311 and library touchpoints) and to prepare state‑advocacy recommendations; each office was asked to transmit an initial assessment back to court by June 11, 2026. "We need to make it easier to create more quality seats," Commissioner Briones said. The court approved the motions unanimously.
