Commissioners appoint Abby Kamen as Harris County attorney, effective June 15

Commissioners voted to appoint Abby Kamen as Harris County attorney effective June 15, 2026, following a motion from Commissioner Adrian Briones and a second from Commissioner Garcia. The vote carried 3–2 after commissioners debated the timing and the recent resignation of the interim county attorney.

Kamen spoke after the vote and pledged to “work hard every single day to defend and protect our county and our communities.” She thanked staff and leaders across the county and said she would prioritize legal representation of county departments and residents. Commissioners who supported the appointment praised her legal and legislative experience and said the office will benefit from continuity and new leadership. Two commissioners said they opposed the process and timing but did not dispute Kamen’s qualifications.

The court set June 15 as the effective date. Commissioners also confirmed an orderly transition for the incumbent interim county attorney and asked the new county attorney’s office to coordinate with existing staff to minimize disruption for pending matters.
