Residents tell county board they oppose proposed landfill expansion over water and economic concerns

Several residents used the public-comment period at the Dec. 18 Vernon County Board meeting to urge supervisors to oppose a proposed expansion of the county landfill.
Daniel Chilten of Viroqua said he opposed the expansion and cited concerns about water quality. Sucheta Connolly of rural Viroqua told the board she was concerned both about water quality and the impact on the local economy. Tom Lukens said he does not believe the landfill can operate profitably and argued it should be closed, while Tom Roepke asked the board to provide more information to the public about the proposal.
Administrative Coordinator Hanan later told the board that SEH, Inc. is getting closer to submitting an addendum to the Department of Natural Resources related to the landfill expansion. Hanan also outlined other year-end items and said staff should treat one another respectfully during the upcoming operational changes. No formal board vote on the landfill expansion occurred during the meeting.
