Commission hears update on Portela Park lighting project; construction expected in July

Staff updated the Community Services Commission on the Portela Park lighting project and said the work is already funded and vendor selection was completed in December.
"We have funding and actually a lot of it comes from CDBG funding over the last couple of years," Kim said, adding staff reallocated some unspent capital improvement dollars to the project. Kim described the tradeoff: one of three ball diamonds would be converted into approximately 50 parking spaces to improve parking availability, and new lighting and utility poles would be installed to allow use of fields after dark.
Commissioners asked about community sentiment; staff acknowledged there has been some opposition from one group but noted that Little League sent a letter of support. Kim said construction will not begin until July to avoid impacting current league seasons and requested that supporters email the City Council if they wish to express support for the project.
