Multiple residents and leaders of the North Asheville Little League reported problems with the recently completed playground and field renovations at Weaver Park, saying community engagement was insufficient and several design choices reduce accessibility and play value.
Speakers said the new playground is smaller than the previous structure, lacks a ramp and adequate seating for caregivers, and that the sandbox and surfacing were improperly finished so bare feet are no longer safe. League volunteers said the baseball diamond was rebuilt to middle‑school dimensions rather than Little‑League (60‑foot baselines) specifications, with dugouts and bullpen placements that do not meet youth needs; they reported worse drainage and an increase in rainouts compared with a neighboring field they helped grade. Parks and Recreation staff and the city manager had met with neighbors and volunteers and staff said they will follow up to correct design and maintenance issues where feasible.
