School committee gives preliminary approval for student exchange trip to Takikawa, Japan

The school committee granted preliminary approval July 28 for Longmeadow High School’s exchange trip to Takikawa, Japan, scheduled April 14–26, 2027.
Superintendent Dr. Roshe said the town and district have a decades-long relationship with Takikawa and that the program alternates years of hosting and visiting. ‘‘We host delegations from Japan and send delegations in alternating years,’’ he said, explaining that the trip is largely for students in the East Asian history class and that Lori Snyder, a high-school history teacher, helps lead the program.
Dr. Roshe described expected activities as cultural sightseeing, host-family stays, school visits and presentations at Takikawa East High School. The motion on preliminary approval was to allow organizers to begin finalizing travel logistics, residencies and host-family pairings; the committee voted unanimously to grant that preliminary approval.
The approval permits organizers to proceed with planning; a final authorization and parental permissions will be required before travel.
