SEIU representative warns Blue Island council of proposed outsourcing at District 130

Doug Taylor, a representative of SEIU Local 73, told the Blue Island City Council during public comment that School District 130 is moving toward contracting out custodial and maintenance work, calling the change “a crisis” for local jobs. “We have, a crisis, and we've been here before… But currently, we have a threat of outsourcing this unit contracting out the jobs,” Taylor said, and asked council members to help “keep the jobs here in Blue Island.”
Taylor said the union has negotiated with the district and that the state labor board has substantiated approximately 20 charges the union brought against the district; he told the council those charges will be heard in September. The union representative said the local custodial workers “care about their students, their schools, and the work they do here” and urged elected officials to discourage contracting that would move positions out of the community.
No district official responded during the public comment period. A separate unidentified attendee echoed Taylor's concern that custodial positions are being contracted away. The council did not take immediate action on the issue at the meeting; Taylor said the union will pursue the substantiated charges through administrative channels and asked for council assistance in the community.
