County hears of Emery County small-reactor milestone, water-free data center partnership

Commissioner Haddock described attending an event in Emery County where Beller Atomics’ small sodium/salt-based reactor reached criticality and supplied power. "They had reached criticality a few days ago, and today they had actually utilized power off of that critical nuclear small nuclear reactor," Haddock said, noting the technology differs from uranium reactors and emphasizing the nontraditional design.
Haddock said Beller Atomics plans to pair the reactor with a 30-megawatt data center designed to operate without water. He told the commission that the facility will be located in Emery County, so Carbon County will not receive any tax base from that project, but commissioners praised the technological development and its potential applications.
