County approves purchase of 10 rifles for SWAT team, funded by tourism grant

Carbon County commissioners approved a request from Sheriff Jeff Wood to purchase 10 specialty rifles for the SWAT team to replace aging weapons that are failing inspection.
Wood said annual inspections revealed firing-pin strikes and barrel wear on some rifles, including cases where bullets tumbled. The department tested rifles from five manufacturers and selected a model available through Culper, which Wood said assembles parts locally in Utah. "We're looking at adding 10 rifles to our armory, and we're going to replace those guns that are starting to fail," Wood told commissioners. He added the expense will be covered by a tourism grant and that there should be money left in the grant to address side-arm work as well.
Commissioners asked a few technical questions, expressed support for well-maintained equipment for preparedness and approved the purchase by voice vote.
