SCDOT details new staff and updates backlog, Fort Johnson roundabout work ahead of schedule

SCDOT representatives reported staffing changes and described work to reduce maintenance and project backlogs in Charleston maintenance. They introduced Steve Diamond as the resident maintenance engineer and said they are bringing in additional foremen and a senior maintenance engineer to better manage projects and drainage work.
"He took the place of Arnold Blanding who retired... Our resident maintenance engineer is Steve Diamond. He's been in the position about 5 months," the DOT representative said while outlining other staff moves and the role of a Drainage Task Force coordinator to improve communications and response times.
The county presentation later identified the Fort Johnson roundabout as an active construction project that is "actually ahead of schedule" with storm drainage mostly finished and utility relocations ongoing; staff said they planned a short closure in early June for relocation work and would coordinate signage and public notices.
DOT staff acknowledged a large backlog of work requests and said they will still need to prioritize projects due to limited crews, but that recent hires and reassignments should help address drainage constraints and maintenance needs across the island.
