Board lifts COA hiring freeze, approves RN pay increase and maintenance work

On a pair of motions brought by Commissioner Jeff Sieting, the Board approved Resolutions 2024-36 and 2024-37 to lift the hiring freeze and allow the Commission on Aging (COA) Director to recruit for an Intake Specialist, Volunteer Coordinator and a Nutrition Services Coordinator. Both resolutions passed on roll-call votes with six yeas and one absence.
Commissioner Robert Baldwin moved to increase the Registered Nurse wage for the COA by $2.00 per hour. Supporters noted recruitment and retention concerns; opponents raised budget constraints. The roll-call vote recorded Baldwin, yes; Comai, no; Bicum, yes; Sieting, yes; Sweet, no; Fisher, yes, producing a 4-2 vote in favor with one absence.
The board also authorized the COA Director to contract for tree removal at a quoted cost of $4,775.00 from Unlimited Outdoors LLC to address site safety and maintenance; that motion passed 6-0 with one absence. Administrator Schaeffer and the COA Director were asked to include the personnel changes and maintenance costs in ongoing budget monitoring.
