Committee backs resolution supporting removal of Rugg Pond dam

The Kalkaska County Board of Commissioners’ Committee of the Whole voted by consensus on Aug. 14 to approve Resolution 2024-35, expressing support for removal of the dam at Rugg Pond. County Administrator David Schaeffer presented a Centralized Motion packet and said staff had conducted research and communicated with conservation entities including the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
Kim Balke of the Conservation Resource Alliance addressed the committee, described research findings and discussed potential funding avenues for removal. Schaeffer said testing would be done to locate the natural river channel before removal work proceeds. The minutes record committee consensus in favor of removal; the resolution is listed as Resolution 2024-35.
